Time-Resolved Fluoro-immunoassays (TRFIA): A Novel Method For Fast And Efficient Screening Of Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is a heterogeneous disease and occupies highest incidence in developed country. There are over 70,000 new cases of bladder cancer each year in the United States alone. The incidence of bladder cancer rises with age, peakingbetween age 50 years and 70 years, and is three times more common in men than in women . The high rate of recurrence is the feature of bladder cancer that makes effective detection means is crucial importance for bladder cancer patients.

Bladder Cancer
The conventional method for bladder cancer detection is morphological examination of cytology samples or cystoscopic biopsies. Urine cytology is poorly differentiated tumors and time-consuming practice for both the patient and physician. The diagnosis and monitoring of bladder cancer are facilitated by the availability of newer, simpler urine based diagnostic tests.

Development and Validation of a Kinetic Model for Enzymatic Hydrolysis Using Candida rugosa Lipase

Due to the importance of hydrolysis reactions, lipase enzymes are the subject of exhaustive research for many medical applications, biological treatment processes, and pharmaceutical synthesis. Glycerols and fatty acids produced from oil degradation are significantly important and had been used in many applications. Although the use of enzymes such as lipase in fatty acids production and glycerols manufacturing is well-known, industrial applications which require high conversion (99%) are hindered by the application of high pressure, high temperature, and the very long reaction times. These severe operating conditions are expensive and in most cases produces dark fatty acids as a result of side polymerization and the formation of undesired by-products. Additionally, treatment and purification of final products by complex distillation methods complicates the process and add further energy concerns.

Validation of a Kinetic Model for Enzymatic Hydrolysis

Research is needed to develop an efficient, simple, and low cost methods to produce clean fatty acids. Interestingly, some reaction parameters do not consume much energy and yet have great impact on the final products. Tailoring reaction parameters is a key factor to debottleneck the difficulties that limits the application of an important reaction such as oil hydrolysis.

A Semi-Empirical Approach to Estimate Kinetic Parameters for the Batch and Continuous Settling of Flocculating Yeast Slurries

Increased productivity is one of the most important objectives in continuous production of ethanol. It is generally accepted that a high concentration of yeast favors an increased ethanol yield of the fermentation process . Several techniques that promote the accumulation ofbiomass in fermenters have been used in continuous fermentation processes, including cell immobilization in polymeric matrices and cell recycle by centrifugation or filtration through membranes. Good performances have been reported for processes using immobilized cells; however, procedures and materials involved in this technique are inaccessible to a large number of small industrial units . Centrifugation and filtration equipments are extremely expensive and prone to mechanical problems; the use of these equipments is limited due to high investment and maintenance costs. Since yeast separation by conventional methods is an expensive operation in alcoholic fermentation plants, alternative separation techniques using cheaper equipment such as hydrocyclones and settlers have been investigated aiming to reduce the costs involved in ethanol production.

Flocculating Yeast Slurries

Although solid particles can settle under the action of a centrifugal force, gravitational sedimentation is understood as the settling of particles within a fluid under the force of gravity. The factors that controlthe settling velocity are the solids concentration in the slurry, the densities of solid and liquid, the size and shape of the particles and the viscosity of the medium. However, the most important factors are the particle size and particle density.

The Significance of Salivary Cytokines in Oral Leukoplakia

Early detection of oral premalignant lesions which might evolve into oral cancer by screening methods using suitable markers is critical. Saliva as a diagnostic fluid seems to be promising and has a number of advantages when compared to the blood-based testing. Histopathologicaldiagnosis is still gold standard when diagnosing oral premalignant lesions, however, studies upon the role of salivary cytokines show promising results although more studies are needed on a larger sample. Cytokines have an important role in oral diseases and increased levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) have been reported in patients with cancer and premalignant lesions such as oral lichen planus and oral submucous fibrosis. Brailo et al.reported significantly increased levels of salivary IL-6 and TNF-alpha in patients with oral leukoplakia when compared to healthy controls.

Salivary Cytokines in Oral Leukoplakia

Furthermore, the levels of salivary IL-6 and TNF-alpha did not correlate with the size of leukoplakic lesions nor with its localization. Recently, Brailo et al.reported that salivary IL-1β and IL-6 were significantly higher in oral cancer patients than in patients with leukoplakia and control group. No significant differences in salivary TNF-α between either of thegroups were seen. Sharma et al.reported increased salivary IL-6 levels in patients with leukoplakia and coexisting periodontitis and in periodontitis patients in comparison to the healthy controls. The same authors found that in the leukoplakia group, increased salivary IL-6 level was noticed together with increase in the severity of dysplasia. Sharma et al.concluded that the use of tobacco had a significant role in the elevation of salivary IL-6 which is contrary to the results of Brailo et al.

Nutrient Profile of Native Woody Species and Medicinal Plants in Northeastern Mexico: A Synthesis

Woody plants and medicinal plants possesss various macro nutrients and micronutrients. These are essential to bring about the growth and development of the plants. These because of their medicinal values are usedtraditionally to cure various diseases. We made a short synthesis of researches undertaken on macro and micronutrients of woody species and medicinal plants.

Native Woody Species

Woody plants of Tamaulipan Thornscrubs in the semiarid regions are of great economic importance for various uses such as timber for furniture, fences, firewood and serve as sources of forage for wild animal grazing. Few studies are undertaken on nutrient contents of woody plants. The specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area per unit mass) appears to be correlated with leaf nitrogen per unit dry mass, photosyntheis and dark respiration sites.
